The Key to Good Oral Hygiene

Blog, News

Good oral hygiene prevents tooth decay, cavities, bad breath and tooth loss. Cleaning your teeth daily prevents cavity causing bacteria from progressing to gum disease and halitosis (bad breath). Regular check-ups and cleanings can prevent these problems as well as provide you with good oral hygiene.

At Tooth Fairy Dental Mt Maunganui, Papamoa, Te Puke and Bethlehem clinics, our qualified dental hygienists specialise in preventative education AND periodontal (gum) treatment and maintenance. Here is a list of their 5 dental hygiene steps you can take to promote great oral hygiene.

Brush your teeth properly, including your tongue!

It is important to try and brush your teeth and tongue for 2 minutes, twice a day. If this is not an option, rinsing your mouth with water minimises the bacteria build-up. When brushing your teeth, position the bristles at an angle of 45 degrees near the gum line and use a motion of small circles on all of the teeth. Using an electric toothbrush is highly recommended and changing the heads or replacing a toothbrush should be every 3-4 months.

Floss regularly

Most of us find flossing a complete chore! However, with handy flossers, gone are the days of trying to manipulate both hands into your mouth! Flossing removes food particles that brushing alone cannot. Flossing gets down deep into the gums and keeps both your teeth and gums healthy.

Visit the dentist regularly

It is recommended that you should visit your dental hygienist at Tooth Fairy Dental Mt Maunganui, Bethlehem or Te Puke at least twice a year. Whilst removing stains and polishing is important, our dental hygienists will also treat gum inflammation, periodontal disease and monitor your whole mouth thereafter.

Limit the intake of sodas and other sugary treats

Beverages containing additives such as corn syrup and food dye can make pearly white teeth appear dull and discoloured. Fizzy and alcoholic drinks contain phosphorus which is an important mineral, but too much depletes the calcium level of the body, causing dental hygiene problems.

Have a teeth-friendly diet

Crunchy fruit and veggies are excellent for your teeth and should be part of your dental hygiene routine. Foods like these require a lot of chewing which increases the production of bacteria-neutralizing saliva. These foods also act as a squeegee on your teeth – wiping away bacteria that causes plaque.
