How often should I visit the dentist?

The mouth is in a continuous state of deterioration due to our lifestyle.

The types of food we eat, habits such as smoking, clenching and nail biting can cause damage to teeth and gums. Illness, antibiotics and medications can affect the balance of good vs bad bacteria in the mouth and even decrease the production of saliva. Diseases such as gum disease and decay can affect teeth and supporting structures. Lesions, whether benign or cancerous, can occur. These often require removal and can cause debilitating problems.

The state of the mouth is heavily influenced by genetics and lifestyle. As lifestyles can be changeable, the risk of dental disease will vary.  Some patients have high pain tolerance and so by the time they notice a problem, it is in the advanced stages and the solution is a lot more expensive than a simple filling.

The purpose of visiting a dentist regularly is to assess the health of the mouth, not only to fix any problems but to identify potential problems early and to advise patients of practical solutions. Many dental diseases are preventable when detected in the early stages. Wouldn’t you rather have prior warning so you have time to do something about it?

The scheduling of your dental exam is dependent on your risk profile, your oral hygiene habits at home, disease risk and medical health. Those with a high risk of dental disease should ideally be reviewed every 6 months until improvement is noticeable. However, a person with a relatively healthy mouth may only require a dental exam once yearly or biennially.

How often you should visit the dentist or hygienist depends on you and your situation. Life is changeable, and so too the frequency of your dental visits may change over a lifetime.
